Grande Alberta Trail
Travel west along Hwy 16 (Yellowhead) to Edson, for an industrial tour of a coal mine or mill. Take Hwy 16 to Hinton, where canyons, hoodoos and unique sand dunes can be seen. Turn northwest along Provincial Hwy 40. Alberta's best-known cave system is along this route-the Cadomin Caves-well worth a side trip. Grande Cache is a terrific wilderness hub, and the gateway to Willmore Wilderness Park. Continue on to Grande Prairie, framed by half-a-dozen parks and lakes, even a 27 metre waterfall. Take Hwy 34 to Sturgeon Lake (great for fishing), through Valleyview, and along Provincial Hwy 43 to Whitecourt-your last chance to see the inner workings of a pulp mill, a newsprint plant, sawmill or fibreboard factory. Distances: Edmonton to Edson 186 km (115 mi). Edson to Hinton 85 km (53 mi). Hinton
to Grande Cache 146 km (91 mi). Grande Cache to Grande Prairie 616 km (383 mi). Grande Prairie to Valleyview 111 km (69 mi). Valleyview to Whitecourt 167 km (104 mi).
